Zarándoklat

Időszaki kiállítás a Zarándoklat kulturális évadban.

VISIT TO THE SCENT MUSEUM

The garden as a place, the herbs as images of the wealth of the created world, and the products as cures for the body and the soul all serve to benefit people. God created them so that joy, happiness and hope would accompany us through our lives.

The first scent museum was opened in Pannonhalma in 2021. The museum offers an interactive insight into the botanical and growing characteristics, as well as the uses of the five herbs traditionally grown in the herbal garden of the Archabbey (French lavender, sage, lemon balm, thyme and peppermint). Additionally, seven scents are also presented at the exhibition (such asfrankincense, musk and rose) that have been used to make perfumes for thousands of years in different parts of the world. During the guided tour, visitors are given a deep insight into the technology used in growing the plants, the distillation of essential oils, as well as in the manufacture of the products.

A Illatmúzeum előzetes bejelentkezéssel 10 fő feletti csoportok számára látogatható.

CANONICAL HOUR

Visitors to the monastery and the archabbey are warmly welcomed to the community prayer at 1.00 p.m. every day and to the Vespers at 5.00 p.m. on Sundays in the Basilica. In this quarter of an hour (or 40 minutes in case of the Sunday Vespers) you can join the community of monks in their worship of God: stopping under the tower, with silent presence, or sitting on a bench with the gestures of prayer or psalms.

ARBORETUM AND HERB GARDEN

The history of the arboretum reaches back to the times when the abbey was established, so it was the first of the known historical Hungarian gardens. In the olden days monks grew and collected medicine plants with great care. There were approx. 80 tree and bush species in the arboretum of the abbey in 1830 which was designed as an English landscape garden by Fábián Szeder in the 1840s.

There are hundreds of tree and bush species today in the protected area constituting part of the 22-hectare Pannonhalma Nature Conservation Area and most of these are particular rarities in our country.

The Arboretum is a place for recreation but regular education and research work takes place here as well. In the past centuries, approx. one hundred and fifty bird species have been recorded during the observations in the arboretum and its surroundings.

The Arboretum and Herbal Garden can be visited free of charge all year round. You can walk your dogs and other pets on a leash in the garden.

We recommend our booklet “Under the Skies around the Monastery” for the family walk.

SAINT MAURUS OF PÉCS LOOK-OUT TOWER

A multi-storey observation platform has been built in the woodland around the monestary in the Sokoró hills by the local forestry commission (Kisalföldi Erdőgazdaság Zrt.) The look-out tower standing on the first little hill to the South of the Archabbey complex was handed over in 2012, and was named after the first Hungarian prelate. St. Maurus was born around 1000 and he belonged to the first generation of Hungarian Benedictine monks, and he was also the first student at Pannonhalma who we know of by name.

Depending on the growth of the surrounding trees we can see the views from the tower at a height of 20 metres. The rolling Sokoró Hills and the town of Pannonhalma lying below, and the basin of the same name, are visible, but when the weather is clear, the Northern lines of the Bakony region can also be seen. Information boards with photos are placed out to help identify the parts of the landscape.

FOLIAGE EDUCATIONAL PATH

The look-out tower and the abbey are connected by a footpath and you can learn about the curiosities of Pannonhalma on the educational path. This educational path was extended with a special point of interest in spring 2018: you can enjoy the beauty of the landscape below from an almost 80-metre walkway running above the treetops. The wood-covered metal structured walkway forms one of the most ancient Christian symbols: the fish. The tail of the fish is the way up from the educational path and the way down brings visitors back to the same educational path. You can see the Pannonhalma buildings and the hilly landscape behind them from the look-out point at the head of the fish.
